Does sanitizing a duct system actually do anything?

Sometimes. It depends on what is in the duct. Sanitizing is a chemical step, not a cleaning step. Fine dust and decomposed-granite grit have to come out mechanically first. Antimicrobial fog applied over a silt layer just coats the silt. On coastal Chula Vista homes, salt-laden marine air keeps supply plenums and coil faces damp, and microbial film grows there. That film is a real target. Dry attic dust is not.
